And the 40 Best Colors to Paint Your Front Door.
If we have stained your front door in the past, and if it has been two years or more since we did so, it’s time to consider a fresh coat of polyurethane before the existing coat breaks down from the weather and sunshine. Poly lasts only a few years and takes a beating if it is in direct sunlight part of the day. That’s true even for the UV protection poly we use from Helmsman. Once that protective coat breaks down, it is a very expensive proposition to restore the door because we have to take it down to bare wood again to restain it and then add coats of poly. As long as we keep adding coats of poly before it breaks down, it is a quick in inexpensive few hours of maintenance.
We first refinished this beautiful door in the picture above about seven years ago. At that time, our customers chose a darker stain color than what you see above. However, they let the door go too long before calling us to apply new poly. When Keith went to inspect the door, he saw that the poly had broken down and was starting to peel, and the door beneath was beginning to show signs of sun damage. So, rather than being a simple poly recoat project for about $250, we had to start over by sanding all the poly and stain off, re-stain three coats, and then add two coats of poly for a total project price of $2,300. Nearly ten times the cost because they did not keep up with the required maintenance for fresh polyurethane on stained doors.
The spring is the best time to do this work because it is not as hot or humid as it is in summer. Both heat and humidity make the application of poly more difficult. It can be done with great care, but the better weather conditions of spring and fall make this work an ideal time to paint or poly front doors.
